How Long Will This Take?
I’m often asked, “How long do you think this will take?” when I receive an inquiry on an organization project. My answer is always the same: it depends on the job.
Some jobs are significant, we’re talking entire households, while some are smaller, like a home office. Either way, the expectation that professional organizers can complete a job quickly regardless of the household circumstances isn’t realistic. We are good at what we do…but also human. Clutter creeps in over the years, settling in and making itself home. When the day comes to address clutter, it takes time to go through it all. There are ways, however, for clients to prepare for a project that contributes to its success.
be ready
A few days before you’ll be working with a professional organizer, become mentally prepared.
You will be delving into stuff that hasn’t been addressed in a long time. Understand that, emotionally, some things may be challenging to sort through. Additionally, get plenty of rest the night before. Feeling tired and dragging through the project will only delay the success of completion. Staying well-hydrated is also essential. Drink plenty of water and have water available during the project. Being both mentally and physically ready makes a big difference.
limit distractions
I cannot emphasize this enough…limit distractions. Distractions come in many shapes and sizes…cell phones, children, pets, television, you name it.
These distractions take your attention away from the task at hand. Trust me, I can get lost in the wormhole, too, but try to keep texting, emailing, phone calls, and social media to a minimum (preferably not at all). Additionally, communicate with family members and friends about what’s going on. Let them know you are taking much-needed time to organize and are unavailable now.
take breaks
Organizing can be mentally and physically taxing. Take 10 minutes to relax and return when you’re ready.
Even though this is time away from the project, it is productive because you allow yourself time to re-energize. Grab a snack, step outside, sit silently, and prepare your mind for the next steps. You’ll jump back in after your break with refreshed motivation.
stay focused
Getting side-tracked will happen naturally. You will be sorting through a lot of stuff, which can be overwhelming.
You can start small and work through it. If you jump to another area of the house or decide to leave something unfinished that you will “get to later,” it will only cause delays. Remember, when this project is finished and you’ve stayed focused, you will have a clutter-free space to enjoy.
Make quick decisions
This is another big one. If deciding whether to keep something takes longer than 30 seconds, you are probably talking yourself out of getting rid of it.
I often say, if you hesitate, that’s your answer. Your gut is always right. The answer should be obvious and immediate and feel right. Making quick decisions keeps the organization on track, which is the goal of getting any project completed promptly.
